Have hard time wrapping brain around wheel sizes

Hello,

The tires I have are Yoko 225/55/R17 and I am having a hard time wrapping my brain around how wheel sizes work. I understand the bolt pattern which is 5x114.3 for my car.

Can I put these tires on 17x8 wheels without them hitting my fenders?

The last number, 17 or 18 in your examples, is the tire DIAMETER. So nyetski, those 17" tires will NOT fit on an 18" wheel.

Sorry, I understand the diameter. I didn't post anything with an 18

I guess it's the width of the wheel / tire. 17x8 is 17 diameter and 8 is the width of the wheel.

What wheel width will my tires fit on? Both 7.5 and 8?

Sorry, my misread. I'd guess going up 1/2" in width would not present a problem, offset has something to do with something.

Oh yeah, offset is another problem. What range offset can I use with 17x7.5 and 17.8?

I believe the Factory Wheel Offset is 50 mm, so anything 38 mm - 50 mm is a safe bet (especially a 42 - 45 mm Offset), based on the specs of wheels I've seen on this site.
