Question Parking brake not tight enough after replacing rear pads

I have a 2015 Mazda 6 GT with hand parking brake. I replaced the rear brake pads today and afterwards I noticed my parking brake is too loose to hold the car on a slight incline. The parking brake handle pulls all the way up to it's limiting stop. The parking brake worked fine before I replaced the rear pads. The new rear pads stop the car normally while driving.

I had to screw in the rear brake caliper piston to get the caliper to clear the new pads. I'm thinking maybe I screwed them in too far?

How does the screw-in piston work? Can it do screwed in too far? Does it automatically adjust back out when you apply the brakes?
