2014 GT - Smart braking / collision warning - how do you test it?

So this 2014 GT we just got / has pretty much every bell & whistle ... the adaptive cruise works and other things like bsm.

I’m just curious - without crashing the car - how do we know this smart city brake or forward collision warning stuff is working properly?

Or - is their something I can - like obstruct the sensors - to see if they alert?

I drive a 2013 Ford Expedition, a 1969 Bronco, and my wife has a 2017 Jeep Rubicon - we don’t have these fancy safety features in our rides.

I drove our sons “new to him” 2014 GT almost 60 miles with the adaptive cruise - was NICE! (And 36mpg, wow) But I didn’t try to drive it into a wall.

If you search on YouTube you’ll find some people setup a large cardboard box and drove towards it. Just have to keep it under 19mph otherwise you will crash through the box. I have not tested it nor do I plan to. My wife apparently did when she was pulling into the garage while the door was still opening.

Exactly this. I've had mine go off randomly when I rolled up too quickly to a parking entrance gate and some low tree branches.

Also - the device will only go off if you completely have your foot off the brake. Learn from the mistakes of Top Gear (Grand Tour now).

I'm not sure if I really want to try this or not. I'm sure the system works as designed, but I'd think that a cardboard box could damage the grille or scratch the paint on the bumper or hood...

We used a box! We hit it the first time - because we touched the brake, we did NOT hit it second time! Woot.

I might try this at home and see if I have the same feature. What I got is a 2018 2.2L diesel variant.

I wondered this the other day....it is funny to imagine testing, however I assume all of these features work as intended and simply drive as though they don't exist.

YouTube videos of Mazda and IIHS testing these features are more than enough to convince me they can reduce the risk of an accident in very specific scenarios. The test video of the Volvo taking out a living test "dummy" at the knees is a perfect example of how technology will never replace common sense. Difficult to not laugh at the expense of someone's stupidity!

I know people who seriously joke about being able to pay attention 'less than they need to' (aka text/drive) with auto braking... smh.

Similar to airbags, seat belts, crumple zones, ABS, etc. We know they can 'potentially' help in the event of an accident, but we don't drive differently knowing they exist (I hope).
