Mazda Confirms Return of Rotary in 2020

See: https://www.foxnews.com/auto/mazda-c...engine-in-2020

I know the diehard rotary purists will be angry about the addition of an electric motor, but personally I think it could be a match made in heaven.

Low-end support of the electric engine for stupid initial torque plus the obnoxiously good top-end rotary.....let's just hope they've held true to their promise to make it more reliable.

Don't see this being used as a power adder, only when the battery goes dead. They're going to use its compact size and ability to use gaseous fuels as an optimal generator engine. And corporate wants almost total electrification by 2030. Stay tuned, I guess.

You don't think so even with a lot of manufacturers leaning that way? Heck, even supercars have been there for years like Koenigsegg. Electric motors would be a great filler for a rotary's weak points while still keeping the car light.

You're probably right, but it would be cool to see.

As much as I'd like to see it in the performance vein, what I read in Autoweek led me to believe in the generator angle. Imagine the initial torque of four electric motors seamlessly transferred to screaming high end horsepower. Goosebumps...

It seems odd that they would pour all this money and hype into the upcoming SkyActiv X engines just to kill them off in under a decade, doesn't it?

Personally, I think gas engines will be around much, MUCH longer than the Tesla-obsessed internet hype machine would have us believe. Regardless, a rotary hybrid is pretty interesting. That Mazda is always coming up with something!

Manual transmissions, wagons, and heavy metal are awesome. Zoom-Zoom \m/

That was exactly my initial "dream" and why I posted this up. I can't even imagine an instant-torque high-rpm rotary monster, but it sounds sublime.

I'll have to take my thread down, didn't realize you already posted this.

I don't know what to think about it. On one hand I'm excited to see that a rotary is making it's way back into the lineup, on the other hand I'm disappointed that it will be a "range extender" in an EV. That seems to indicate that it may be a "when the battery is about to die, the rotary engine comes on" scenario which is exactly what I wouldn't want.

I knew it was too much to hope for to get another manual transmission rotary sports car, but I'll wait to see the exact specs before I get ticked.

Hopefully they learned their lesson from the 8:
-better starter
-more durable apex seals (yeah right)

Part of me wants to laugh as an "electric" vehicle paired with this engine will start devouring oil like its going out of style. Make sure you top up the oil level and the battery level or you will be double-screwed.

Time will tell.
