2020 Mazda 3 Preview

Car & Driver recently did a brief write up about the upcoming Mazda 3 reset for 2020. Style-wise, the Mazda 3 looks to be adopting the same styling cues as the current 6, which includes the front turn signals and fog lights integrating into the headlight cluster. The base model will come with the same 2.0L I4 it comes with now, but higher trim models will eschew in the new SkyActiv X 2.0L HCCI motor. Preliminary numbers are 190HP and 207lb-ft of torque, with up to a 30% increase in fuel efficiency.

The good news is that a manual transmission is being reported as being available across all trims.

The bad news? Mazda may be ditching it's multi-link rear suspension for a lower cost (and less dynamic) torsion beam setup.

If the Sky-X engine proves up reliability-wise it'll be a monster. Stick it in the "6", even in the same configuration, and you have a 30% fuel economy boost with the same output despite being half a liter smaller. Produce a 2.5L version and you get about 250HP with close to 50Mpg on the highway.

Yeah, I'll buy that, so long as I can have it with a stick!
