An Interesting April for Mazda Sales

April was a mixed bag in regard to Mazda sales. On a positive note, Mazda 6 sales spiked almost 30% as the new 2018 models started appearing on dealer lots. On the more curious side is that both the CX5 and CX9 both saw relatively flat numbers for April, with the CX3 slipping 1%. The Mazda 3 fell 21%, likely due to rumors of the new model coming soon. The worst performer was the MX5, which was down a whopping 36.5%. Overall, sales were down 4.6% for the month versus last year, though not as bad as rivals such as Nissan who is down almost 28%.

The pinch is coming, and roadsters are a highly-discretionary purchase.

"A mix of the new 2018 Mazda6, now with the option of the SKYACTIV-G 2.5T gasoline turbo engine, and the previous-generation modelled to a sales increase of 29.3 percent year-over-year (YOY), with 2,909 vehicles sold in the month of April."

I think a big part of the boost was due to clearing out of the 2017 and 2017.5 models. March and April had awesome incentives (as high as $5000) on the outgoing models. I was in the market at that time, and anecdotally saw inventory selling quickly. I bought my 2017.5 6MT in April, so I'm counted as part of the 2,909 vehicles sold that month.

There are still a few residual 2017's left (mostly GTs) and they're still heavily discounted, so what will be more telling of the uptake of the 2018 models is what sales look like in June or July
