Genesis, Kia Get Top Nods for JD Power IQS

JD Power has released their annual Initial Quality Survey and the Hyunda/Kia Group has taken home all the gold. The Genesis line took home top honors for premium vehicles, with Porsche and Lincoln right behind. Lexus falls to 4th place after years of being near the top of the list.

In non-premium cars, Kia took the top honor, with stablemate Hyundai and Ford right behind. Mazda fell to the mid-pack ranking 13th overall in the non-premium category. Mazda took exceptional beatings on quality design overall. Surprisingly, Subaru ranked dead last on the list, with Mitsubishi just above them for non-premiums. Perhaps not as surprising is Land Rover and Jaguar taking bottom status in the premium market.

I must say that I would take a vehicle with higher mechanical quality than design quality. Doesn't matter what it looks like if it's in the shop half the time.

IMO these awards (most) are truly a waste of time. Generally subjective and are often dictated with advertising dollars.

Think of where Hyundai/Kia was as a company 20yrs ago. Laughing stock. Pure junk. They've come a long way since then. But I don't buy they're top. They're boring as fuck to drive. I'd agree with you that a lot of this is subjective. I mean, the Nissan Frontier being the top midsize? That chassis and drivetrain have been around mostly unaltered for 14yrs now. Kia Sorrento being best midsize SUV? I rented one once. Couldn't wait to dump it back in the rental yard.

Funny, everything you just said is true. We used to call them (Kia/Hyundai) throw-away-cars.

They may not be at the top of any of our lists, but I'll admit that Hyundai/Kia has come a LONG way, so much that I don't hesitate to recommend them anymore. I have a friend that's on her second Elantra, and she loves them. They've been reliable and trouble-free for her.

Conversely, another friend of mine bought a Kia Forte, and despite the fact that it hasn't stranded him, it's had a few electrical gremlins, and some repairs I'd consider "early" for the mileage.

To me, they're just like every other car that's sold today: You could get a gem, or a lemon, from just about anyone (including Tesla, much to the chagrin of Elon... lol)

Hyundai has gone a long way with their design & quality comparing 20 years ago but every business has to start somewhere. Doesn't help that they came out while Toyota & Honda where already on the rise to their famed status of long-term durability that still carry's on til this day.
I've owned a 2012 Genesis Coupe brand new for 6 years/80K no issues FUN CAR other than the blue tooth didn't work but that's it, wasn't a bad car it did have some minor flaws but what car doesn't right?
