Is manual really that important nowadays? I mean, sure it's fun and more connected but manual no longer equates to better performance or better MPG. Would I rather get a manual on a slower car or an automatic/dual clutch on a faster car? Obviously, fast is an important factor of fun. Case in point, 185hp in a manual Mazda 6 or 325hp with a dual clutch? No amount of manual is going to make me pick the 185hp car. That being said, other factors matter. The Ford looks horrible, sorry. The model posted in the OP is also much more expensive.

It is funny that people would argue over which is better manual vs. automatic when the end of the day, isn't it up to the car owner??? If you like auto, great, I personally hate it. I don't feel in control, I don't feel connected, I just don't like it. I also am one of those people who HATES traction control as well. I have a 475HP v8 rx7 with no traction control and yes, it is manual. Traction control is my right foot.

One of the main reason's I own a Mazda 6 is because it is just fun to drive, half of that to me is the manual transmission. Oh, and I am even more rare because my wife loves stick to... and one final benefit, it is one of the best theft deterrents.

Given the choice, I'd gladly snap up a third pedal and work out my right arm more often.

Having said that, we are talking about a 4-door sedan in a class that makes up a big part of the overall market (which is slowly being eroded by crossovers). And yes, unfortunately, the US market loves only two pedals. Ford is only trying to grab a larger part of the market.

I'll gladly take a sports car with a third pedal, but for my day-to-day vehicle, when I'm surrounded by idiots all trying to get to work or get home, I'm fine with the gear changes being done for me.

And not for nothing, but the modern ATX is leaps and bounds above slushboxes produced as recently as a decade ago.

But still, it doesn't change the fact that IMO Mazda isn't holding up to the Zoom-Zoom mantra, and slushbox or not, Ford has my attention.

Ford just announced a Fusion Sport

Hello I'm new here. Back in June I was car shopping and my finalist were the mazda 6 and my current car lexus gs. I chose the Lexus for 2 reasons, first the hp. Whole the 170+hp is decent it's really not enough for me. Secondly was awd. Living in ny that drive train is a must.

Back to the topic The fusion just got a sports model with 325hp and awd I figured this would probably be the fire Mazda needed to release the speed6 I've been hearing about since 2014. Has anyone heard any news on this? Mazda is the only one in this class with one engine choice and it's well underpowered.

Thanks

Looks like the Detroit NAIAS has zero news from Mazda. Therefore, I doubt any MazdaSpeed vehicles will be here for 2017. Then again, SEMA could surprise me.

As far as the Fusion Sport, I think it's a farce. The Sport has the following changes from a Platinum model:

19" Goodyears
Slightly larger brakes
Slightly firmer suspension calibration
Blacked out grille
Adjustable dampers from the Lincoln MKC
Firmer front seats
Sport Mode on the transmission to change shift logic
Paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

Otherwise, the Sport and Platinum are one in the same. Both will be automatics. Both also will have twin turbo V6 motors with a questionable track record.

So for me, no thanks.

325-hp Ford Fusion Sport fills "unmet needs" of midsize buyers

Let me repeat that for Mazda: Unmet needs of midsize buyers.

So Ford finally has the 2017 Fusion Sport listed on their website, available Summer 2016:

http://shop.ford.com/build/fusion/?g...-cars#/select/

$33850 as base. For that, you get the 2.7L EcoBoost V6 (which is only available in the Fusion for the Sport trim), AWD, heated (up front) suede/leather seats, 9 speaker Sony sound system, illuminated visors, sport pedals, remote start, auto-dimming side view mirrors and LED headlights.... but you're still stuck with an 6spd Automatic and a ROTARY gear selector.

PASS

If it's not a stick, it's not in my driveway.

Funny thing.... they list 19" rims but 18" tires on the equipment list. Also... no indication of fuel economy. I estimate high 20s with the AWD system.

Prior to the '14 Mazda6 Touring, 3 of my last 4 cars were manuals, including a 2006 MX-5. I do love rowing my own.

Shortly after buying the 6 I found that I could easily add paddles and I did. While I make no claim that it's a suitable substitute for a true manual, it does offer another degree fun to driving the Mazda 6 in the twisties while still allowing for the benefits of an ATX when dealing with city traffic.
