I'm new here. I own a 2015 Mazda 6 GT. I came here because like many, I really want to upgrade the head unit, but I want to keep the functionality of the commander switch. So I'm hoping to discuss that problem some more.

Welcome to the forum!

There's a couple head units out there that allow for *some* commander knob functionality, but I hate to inform you that no one has it working 100% (and likely never will). Hence why I've stuck with my OEM TomTom.

Yea that's kinda what I've seen. I'm an engineering teacher and my students love projects like that. I was kinda hoping to see if anyone had tried to turn the commander knob into a USB connection. I think I saw where someone had mapped out the pins. If I could do that, I think I could come up with something. But right now I'm just trying to find a decent head unit that looks like the OEM one. I'm not a big fan of the tablet versions.

It seems like you could use an arduino to make the head unit think it's a steering wheel remote. That to me sounds like a great extra credit project for your students.

Was going to be my exact suggestion. I'm a Sys Admin for Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at a University and the kids love using those little things.

In that case, you'd be fine with getting any of the Ali-Express head units that are quad-core and run some flavor of android. I only say the quad core ones because the ones advertised as that seem to be the best bang for your buck. I'm sure there are plenty of good other ones, I just can't remember them off-hand.

That sounds like a good idea as well. They love those arduinos as well. I think we'll be able to make it happen. Many of these students love making android applications and have lots of experience making electrical systems, working with CANBus, and programming with LabVIEW and Java through our Robotics team. I think it's going to come down to creating the inputs on the board to accept the controller (which is basically what it is).

I'm also gonna look into cooling. It seems a problem with many of these units is there's not sufficient cooling. I mean it's basically a small computer and some of them don't come with even a heat sink or a fan. Again, easy fix but something that'll need to be looked into.

This type of OEM integration of aftermarket parts is my favorite thing. Please put up a thread to document it. And don't leave out any details!

I've heard of an Android head unit plus its own Commander, similar to what we have on Mazda.

I'll confirm this next week.
