04 6s: Different state, same/different catalyic converters?

I have a car from New York, but now live in the south, where the emissions standards are much less strict. I found out that I really need all four replaced. The estimates for replacing them I'm getting are sky-high, but I'm wondering if I can use a rather less expensive replacements that pass muster down here without having to do significant other conversions. Simply put, will less expensive cat's which are legal down here present the same form and fit as the original strict New York-legal models?

Low quality converters will not be able to keep the emissions down as well as stock converters, but they should not clog any faster and the only drawback is a possible check engine light in a few years time. If you don't need to pass emissions testing then this is not an issue for you.

With my aftermarket parts I only have 1 converter now, one is hollowed out. I am going to hollow out the other one this winter as we no longer have emissions testing here. My CEL is on, but it does not effect anything else (other than my car pollutes slightly more). I would bet money if they put a tailpipe sniffer in my exhaust the emissions would either be at the threshold or maybe at worst slightly above.

Headers are expensive and hard to find so you could also just punch out all 4 converters and put the old exhaust back on as well.

I would expect asny shop to want $2K+ to do this job with parts included if you do replace all 4 that way. Most shops will not punch out converters as that is illegal, but I am sure you could find a local independent mechanic to do it for 3-4 hours worth of labor IF everything comes apart.

I agree with @b1lk1 on simply gutting (hollowing out) the cats I did this on my car as well.
