Hey there

My son has a '04 Mazda 6 with 4 cyl, 4 speed auto tranny. Battery light is on but he just got the alt replaced and the bat only drops to 10v when starting and the overall voltage is 14.4. Why else would the batt light be on

Sounds like itís charging alright I would start by double checking the connections to the alternator since that was recently replaced. Are there any other symptoms, flickering/dim lights unusual idle or anything else out of the ordinary?

Got it lol, I only ask about the lights and idle because if it wasnít charging (we know it is though) or if something isnít connected right it could cause these things.
