Poor 16 Mazda6 FM Radio reception solved
I live about 30 to 35 miles from the local antenna farm. My 16 Mazda6 has poor reception in the lower half of the FM dial. The sound is blotted out with "pfft - pfft" as you drive along (particularly as you pass under electric wiring), as if I am in a much more rural area. My other cars have no problem.
Two dealers state that this is just the way the radio system is. In fact, one dealer compared the radio of another 16 Mazda6 and found the same strength of reception using diagnostic tools.
Driving a 17 Mazda6 loner car in my area, I found NO poor reception. The Dealer above also tested a 18 Mazda6 and found double the reception strength. So Mazda has solved this for later models.
Having nothing to loose, I added an additional wire from the arial contact pad in the upper part of the back window and taped the wire to the window in a vertical orientation, ending near the lower edge of the widow.
The reception problem is solved!
I added the 22 gauge wire by pulling out (a little) the plastic cap over the pad and placed a 3/16 inch circle of stripped part of the wire against the pad. I then stuffed a small piece of polyfoam between wire circle and plastic cap to maintain the electrical contact with the pad.
The installation looks crude, but the reception is great! I am thinking of substituting a stiff 1/16 or 3/32 diameter metal rod for the wire in some way so that it is more stable, looks better and can bear up to some abuse, like window washing.
