RX-8 owner considering a MS6

Hi Everyone,

My name is Jesse and I am currently considering selling my RX-8 for a Mazdaspeed6. But first, some info.....I am married with two kids, both under 3 years old. I am a mechanical engineer with a love of cars. I have owned my RX-8 for two years now, and its lack of size is really starting to show with two kids. It is my daily driver, track, and autocross car. One of the main reasons I bought an RX-8 was to share my "fun car" with the family (kids fit in it). It still functions as a kid mover when needed, but it makes the front passenger seat useless with a rear facing car seat behind it. I love my RX-8, and don't really want to get rid of it, but I also want a car that can move all of my family as well.

I know a little about the MS6 as I was trying to get my wife to buy one a few years ago. My main question is if a Mazdaspeed6 would be a capable track car (roadcourse, not drag) with the right suspension/wheel/tire setup. The best part about my RX-8 is the neutral handling that shines on the track. I am afraid that the MS6 will never have a similar handling feeling, even with an adjustable anti-sway bars. Is it possible to achieve a neutral handling MS6? I think I already know the answer to this, as I have a good amount of suspension knowledge, but would love to be proven wrong with some examples of modified MS6's that people have tracked with success.

Thanks in advance for any information.
Jesse

PS: here are some pics of my RX-8

RX-8 owner considering a MS6

Welcome to 6club Jesse.

The speed6 is a great car but think of her as a hot, high maintenance girlfriend. She needs lots of attention, time & effort but she gives ya a great ride if you treat her good.

Ive never driven an rx-8 but i can tell you the the 6's do handle incredibly well for a full size sedan. The difference between the speed & normal 6 suspension wise is very minimal. I know @CanyonRider tracks his 6 on a regular basis & he is likely the best person to get info from regarding tracking a 6.

You can make a 6 into a reasonably competent and fun road course machine with the right setup. Canyon can, and has, certainly covered the topic, and I suspect will be happy to chime in.

A speed6 will bring plenty of power and AWD to the party at the expense of some extra weight and some extra understeer to dial out.

But, to get to the gist of your question- NO. You'll never get any 6 to mimic the handling of your 8.

Oh yeah, you can indeed make a fun track day car out of a 6, and many have, but if your 8 was set up properly there's no way a 6 can touch it. Math just isn't right.

All that said, honestly, it's the DRIVER.
I've seen more than one 6 totally out drive an 8 based solely on the skill of the meat bag behind the wheel.

Welcome!

I don't know if you're aware of the show Top Gear, and i'm talking about the original U.K. version, they have a power lap board and the Speed 6 was 4/10s a second off the rx-8. Of course both were stock and driven by the Stig but just something to consider

I wish I had the room for three cars, but alas I do not. Also if I was going to have a dedicated track car I would probably have something different than the RX-8. To me the RX-8 was a compromise in order to have a "4-door" daily driver than could fit car seats.

Currently my RX-8 has Progress Tech springs (30% stiffer, progressive not linear, with 1" drop), adjustable front and rear Agency Power anti-sway bars (200-250% stiffer than stock), 18x9 MB Weapons with 265/35R18 Kumho XS front and rear, and an agressive track alignment.

I know that a MS6 won't be able to compete with the Zen feeling I get when tracking my well balenced RX-8, but I am more interested if anyone has been able to modify the suspension/alignment to make it more neutral.....or at least as neutral as possible for a 3800 pound car with a 60/40 weight distribution.

How does the AWD system react during dynamic handling situtations? Does it change the balance of the car during cornering? I used to own a first gen Audi TT Quattro, and that AWD system was really unpredictable at the limit. The Audi's limitation was that it was FWD based and didn't send power to the rear unless the fronts slipped, causing the handling balance to shift abruptly. Is the MS6 AWD system similar?

Wish I could answer with good info, but I've never tracked the car
Few other speed6 owners here have, and if we're real lucky, maybe @FORZDA 1 will see this and talk track behavior

While I enjoy nothing more than talking track, I'm not sure I have much to add (other than opinion) since I have driven neither car you are discussing. That said, here's my opinion:

1. For reliability and simplicity, I don't think I would chose the MS6 as a dual purpose family/track car - although I'm sure its a hoot on the track. I'd be looking at a used BMW or Lexus IS.

2. As previously stated, doubtful a MS6 will ever "feel" like an RX8. Example: I'm lucky enough to have a Mazda6s dedicated to track duty and also a Bullitt Mustang as a DD. I have autocrossed both and I can adjust the suspension on the Mazda6 from understeer to neutral to WAY too much oversteer. Even when the Mazda6 is neutral or tail-happy, it drives and feels nothing like the Mustang - it feels like a well-balanced FWD car. Both are a hoot to drive, just very different.

Best of luck in your search and I hope to see you on track!

Re: RX-8 owner considering a MS6

Welcome! That's a beautiful rx-8. I've always been a huge fan of them. The 6s are great too though!
