Need Radar Detector Help

Hey everyone,

I'm hoping some people in this regional forum could help since state by state police cars can use different types of radar. I've got a cheap Cobra detector and it has honestly been fantastic the last 3-4 years until all these new Ford Taurus cop cars came out in CT and now the thing never goes off (no Ka band, nothing). Last weekend I got pulled over in RI going 18 over the speed-limit in town and luckily walked away without a ticket, but it reinforced my need to look into a better detector. I want a wireless one, not many options, so I am thinking of getting the Escort Solo S3. It's not cheap so I asked a best friend who has it and says it hardly ever goes off on the new cop cars in CT either!

So now I'm lost of what to buy! Anybody know of any new technology the cop cars have or frequencies that many of the radar detectors on the market won't pick up on these new cars? I've been waiting a long time for new detectors to come to the market to solve this issue. Anybody have good luck with theirs?? Any help is appreciated!

If you're looking for something to get the LiDAR that most Staties are using then you'll probably be in the $400 range, but I don't know a great deal about detectors.

The one person who knows more than anyone else about them is @DisplacedMainah. He's the guy to ask

I have the Passport 8500XI and it's been working pretty well for me for the past 6-7 months.

Ok soo you have some options. All will be over 200.

I run a Cobra Vedetta SLR 650G, this is a nice radar. I detect at distance, and does spot lidar. Interesting enough not many cops run lidar, but some do. Its a nice flipup/flip down design. It does have disablable bands, as well as GPS will notify you of speed traps, and AURAŽ database of camera locations. Its very helpful, it has a headsup display lets you know about your speed direction as well as battery volts. I detect things about 100-200 yards before i used to. I actually had it go off on a side road, I could see 1 mile. Down the road about 100 yards a cop was up a side street about 75' slowed down he had nothing on me by the time he saw me.

Other options
Escorts are real nice
belpro quality unit
Cobra XRS-9970G GPS unit

Look for 2014 reviews because they will have the lidar coverage you are looking for. FYI the new detectors will pickup the laser collision systems most new cars have will annoy the shit out of you.

any other info or questions just ask. I try to keep up, but i wont spend over 200 on a detector. It has paid for itself already.

A note on laser detectors: They pretty much just tell you that you're getting a ticket. Laser doesn't bounce all over the place like radar waves, so there's not really a way for you to have an early warning. The laser is picked up by the detector when the cop is shooting you with it.
