2018 Signature seat trim issue

Hi Everyone,

Thought I'd share another issue I found on my car. I had the car for a road trip this weekend and had two people in the rear seats (first time I had rear passengers for such a long trip). I noticed today when I was cleaning it out that BOTH of the trim pieces in the rear seat backs are broken.
It seems there is a tiny metal support rod in them that doesn't go all the way to the ends and if any pressure is placed on the ends from the surrounding leather the plastic breaks and the ends fall off.

Car is going to dealer tomorrow to have a separate issue fixed (chrome window sill trim is lifting) so I will see what they say about this issue.

Does anyone know if these are replaceable? I may see if I can just get them taken out because the design is sh!t and the new ones will probably just break again.

Pretty disappointing. This car just doesn't seem to stop with issues!

Dude you need to sacrafice something to the car gods. No issues with mine. Just cleaned the seats. By the looks of it, something may have snagged the edge.

How many miles are on it?

I had the same thing happen on my driver's seat, and the dealer replaced the broken trim piece under warranty. At first they ordered an entire new Nappa leather seat back, but then determined that the trim piece was replaceable independently on my existing leather seat back. It looks perfect again, but like you I have to wonder if it will just break again in time...

I do sacrifice to the car gods! A substantial payment every two weeks..haha.
I also thought it got snagged but then when I saw it happened to both sides and started pushing the seat, I can see exactly what happened.

There are 64,000 kms on it now so just shy of 40k miles.

This is very good news. The dealer I go to has been great to work with so hopefully they warranty it. I may bring up that the clock spring is squeaking again, too :/

I am so curious how these pieces are attached to the seat back but I am not touching it any more until the dealer looks at it.

Just washed it and she looks good!

Do you have any information on what exactly they did? My dealer is saying that they indeed have to replace the entire seat back and they are on the fence if this a warranty claim. I would appreciate anything you can share with me. Even the dealer you had the car to.

My dealer initially thought the same thing and ordered an entirely new leather seat back which they were still going to cover under warranty. While they referred to it as a new seat back it turned out to actually be the Nappa leather seat back cover which they thought they'd replace mine with. Once they took apart my seat and removed the cover they realized that the trim piece is connected with a couple of clips which would be replaceable on my existing leather seat back, so they then checked again and found that they were able to order a replacement trim piece alone. Once received they installed it onto my leather, reassembled the seat and I'm happy to say it all fits back together tightly and the repair is undetectable from new (and I'm very particular!) My dealer is Continental Mazda in Naperville IL if your dealer needs to contact them for details. Here's what my invoice states was done:

DRIVERS SEAT BACK LEATHER HAS A PLASTIC TRIM ON IT THAT BROKE, INSPECT AND REPLACE WITH SOP
CAUSE: FAILED
801 SEAT TRIM R&R

Thank you so much for that. I will relay that on to my dealer in hopes that they can help me out.

Damn! I am truly sorry that all these issues keep appearing on your 6.

I really can't see why you'd need to replace the entire seat back for a small piece of trim that's not part of the frame or leather itself. That's asinine.

On a personal note, that was another reason why I picked the Reserve. I've never seen any other seat with a piece of plastic trim running across the back of the seat like that, and it would bother me to no end if I felt it digging into my backside. Now it looks like it could turn into another issue for all Signature owners and Mazda...

I thought the seats looked nice and they are comfortable (this piece doesn't poke your back or anything like that..at least when it's not broken) but it seems the plastic trim can not handle any sort of pressure from the surrounding leather. When you push the trim into the leather surrounding it it puts pressure on the ends and snaps the tip off that is not reinforced by the little metal bar that runs down the inside of the plastic. If you look at the picture you can see the little tip of the metal reinforcement that is sticking out. The dealer actually broke the other side of the piece while they were investigating so that goes to show how fragile it is.
