Um, resurrecting an 8 year old thread with super outdated information to ask a random question - sure why not?

Your old drive is likely only USB 2.0 (or, heaven forbid even 1.0), which is going to be your bottleneck for transferring data. After that, it will be the speed of the drive itself and the speed of the new drive. After that, the types/sizes/amount of files that you're transferring. Tons of tiny files, like pictures, take way longer to transfer than a few large files (for various reasons).

If you're looking for the fastest way to copy data then I'd suggest getting hold of something running Linux (Mac is fine, since it's technically FreeBSD, but Macs don't come with read/write capabilities for NTFS, which is what your drive is probably formatted as). 'rsync' is your best friend in this case since you'll be able to monitor the transfers in real-time.
