CarPlay Announced

It is announced for this summer for the 2018 Mazda6 models. Standard on Touring and above, no mention of the Sport models. Anyone who already has an 18 Mazda6 before the summer is eligible for an upgrade. No other US models are mentioned and no mention of retrofitting older Mazda Connect capable vehicles for US models. Models in Canada will be retrofitted in the fall and the 2019 CX-9 in Canada will contain CarPlay.

I'm reading some reports of a retrofit kit coming in Fall 2018, compatible with any vehicles with MazdaConnect. Been waiting on that since I bought my 2016 6, so fingers crossed it's not just vaporware.

Willing to wager that 2016 will be the oldest model that will have an update available. Those with MazdaConnect 2 (the non-tablet like system) like myself won't see the light of day on this.

Did they abandon the Android Auto then in favor of Apple Car Play?

"The new 2018 Mazda6 will be the first Mazda vehicle to offer support for both CarPlay and Android Auto in the United States, with Mazda planning to introduce the feature this summer. CarPlay will be available as an upgrade option on all 2018 Mazda6 models with Touring trim level and above, and customers who have already purchased a Mazda6 when CarPlay compatibility rolls out will be able to get the feature added to their vehicles...
In March of 2017, Mazda said that CarPlay, when introduced, would be "retroactively upgradeable onto all Mazda Connect systems with a potentially minimal hardware addition needed." Mazda Connect was first introduced in Mazda vehicles in 2014, which means quite a few Mazda vehicles will be eligible for the upgrade..."

Wondered on this too....the reports are confusing. I'm hoping it's just that the Apple-centric sites don't bother talking about Android, rather than Mazda only offering Car Play as a retrofit option.

Build your Mazda 6 page is up on mazdausa.com, yikes! There 5 trim levels for the 6, Grand Touring gets the turbo and the last two upper trim levels Reserve and Signature. Really disappointed in the choice of interior colors for all trim levels, kinda sucks.

It would be nice if they went all the way back to 2014 for this. That being said, I doubt it'll be a complimentary service for that old of a vehicle and I don't necessarily see it being a TSB. Here's hoping I'm wrong

Mazda may have no choice.
I don't think the hardware (control and display) or the software (Mazda Connect) were designed in 2014 to take the 2018 Apple Play and Android Auto upgrades.

I made my infotainment system AA & Carplay compatible on my 2014 Touring by replacing the head unit. Don't get me wrong, it sure is nice. But why are so many people getting in a wad about Android Auto & Carplay? I admit it is convenient, sure, but I guess I don't understand why so many people appear to making their purchasing decision on an app? I'm not saying this doesn't need to be added since every other manufacturer is doing it too, but wouldn't the vehicle's driving characteristics be more important?
