CALIFORNIA WINDOW TINT LAW ALLOWS THE FOLLOWING DARKNESS FOR CAR WINDOW TINTING

The darkness of tint is measured by (VLT%) Visible Light Transmission percentage. In California window tint law, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed to pass through the combination of film and the factory tint of the window.
Here is what is allowed in California window tint law:
WindshieldNon-reflective tint is allowed on the top 4 inches of the windshield.Front Side Windows Must allow more than a total of 70% light in. Transmission through glass.Back Side Windows Any VLT can be applied legally on this window.Rear Window Any VLT can be applied legally on this window.

Wow, 1999? Was it that long ago? I didn't even realize there was a change at all.

That car looks amazing with tints and the black color. My neighbor has a black Kia Optima SX with 20% all around, and your 6 looks better. Now if Mazda will just put in that skyactive turbo to compete with the 2.0t of the Kia.

Hope you enjoy yours for many years to come.

My buddy that has a black Optima ordered badges called K5, and changed all his factory ones out, and now know one knows what his car is. Of course with the 6, you should always have pride in driving a Mazda. The Sky is the limit.

Regarding the tint laws in California, I asked a buddy of mine who works in a Law Library about window tinting in CA, and here's what he pulled up from the books:

(d) Notwithstanding subdivision (a), clear, colorless, and transparent
material may be installed, affixed, or applied to the front side windows,
located to the immediate left and right of the front seat if the following
conditions are met:

(1) The material has a minimum visible light transmittance of 88 percent.

(2) The window glazing with the material applied meets all requirements
of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 205 (49 C.F.R. 571.205),
including the specified minimum light transmittance of 70 percent and
the abrasion resistance of AS-14 glazing, as specified in that federal
standard.

(3) The material is designed and manufactured to enhance the ability
of the existing window glass to block the sun's harmful ultraviolet A rays.

(4) The driver has in his or her possession, or within the vehicle,
a certificate signed by the installing company certifying that the
windows with the material installed meet the requirements of this
subdivision and identifies the installing company and the material's
manufacturer by full name and street address, or, if the material was
installed by the vehicle owner, a certificate signed by the material's
manufacturer certifying that the windows with the material installed
according to manufacturer's instructions meets the requirements of this
subdivision and identifies the material's manufacturer by full name
and street address.

(5) If the material described in this subdivision tears or bubbles,
or is otherwise worn to prohibit clear vision, it shall be removed
or replaced.

This other website I found also mentions the minimum 88% VLT. And it also give some helpful explanations about legal tinting:

California Legal Window Tint Percentage - Auto Body Paint Glass Shop Murrieta Ca, Menifee CA Window Tinting

However, I called my dealer to ask them and they said any tinting on the front side windows and windshield is illegal. They suggest I just get the back side windows and rear done.

Looks good bro. Getting my 6 tinted tomorrow. Still deciding what % to go. Have a few brands in mind, but I dont want the really reflective one,nor do I want the cheap,go purple in 6months,type tint. Lol. We'll see how it goes. I really want the blacc for my pebble ash. Dont think reflective will match all to well, plus I dont want any added attention from the cops. Had a reflective on my blazer extreme in 06,got pulled over on the wide for my tint but they always just told me to get it fixed without givin me a ticcet. A yr later I did the blacc,non-reflective on my tundra and never got bothered about it. Hah. So blacc is what Im hoping for without taking the cheap route.
