Let's talk tail lights!!

What are some of your favorite type of tail lights and looks. Do you like the spotted LED look, more of an even glow or even the uniglow? I'm trying to gain inspiration for my tail light build but at a little fork in the road. While I know how I want the segments, I'm not sure if I want a uniglow look like the dodge Race lights or the dotted look you see on so many other cars. What's your take on tail lights?

While I think these are cool, I'm not going to go all crazy like the Mazda Furai concept

I don't like Nissan GTR, Dodge Charger/Dorango, etc tail lights. I like a clean and attactive look, with a little flare. The continuous light bar across the truck just doesn't do it for me.

Most german cars have nice tail lights that I like, but none really stick out in particular for me.

My top picks for taillights:

EDIT: Sorry, I obviously suck at the images on forums thing. Just look at the link then find the picture at the bottom.

Yeah I don't care for the circle looking lights such as the GTR or even the 1st gen lights either lol. I do like the race track light on the dodge because of their center pieces. I wanted to do something like it on my Eclipse but got the 6 in its place.

What I DON'T like:

1. LED tails where the individual LEDs are quite noticeable within the lens. It looks cheap, especially now since they've been using LED technology for over 25 years. Luckily, Mazda does this right, but this?
Fail

2. Tails where they do NOT use amber for turn signals (I'm looking right at you, Ford and Chevy!) Also looks cheap.

3. Tails where the actual brake light is the smallest part of the assembly. VW used to do that all the time. I'm sorry, but when you hit the brakes, the biggest, brightest light should be from the brake light, not the turn signal or marker light.

One other thing: Rear fog lamps have been used in Europe for decades, they should also be mandatory here in the States, and activate also when the windshield wipers are activated. Some states (with good reason) require headlamps to be on when wipers are on, and no, DRLs do NOT count by themselves!

I like LED tails when they are smoothed out rather than individual points of light. To me, a dotted tail looks like a cheap aftermarket install rather than a thoughtfully engineered and designed light. I think the one exception for me is the current generation of Audi sequential individually addressed LED turn signals. I'm quite fond of that set up. Though, I have to admit, it is almost distracting as I want to watch them go :-)

+1000 for Amber turn signals. It looks so much better. Though, my main dislike about German brands in particular is that the ENTIRE brake light is the signal, especially on Audi's.

Your 3. is the only thing I dislike about many of Lexus' tail lights, even though they look so good. Also why I like the 2016-2018 Kia Optima tail lights over the 2019 refresh where the brake light is limited to a small string of LEDs on the rear quarter. instead of the large string of LEDs on the pre-refresh, as shown in my first post.

1. So diffused so far seems to be leading lol.

2. I was actually wanting to go brake as turn with 5 segment sequential. I suppose I could do a strip for reverse and a strip for turn and divide the amber strip into 5 segments. It would leave plenty of room left for the red LEDs.

3. I agree 100%. I want everyone to see that I'm stopping lol. People here in FL need all the help they can get. That's if they are not looking at their phone at the time smh.

I'm still going to rock my side markers for a bit lol I was thinking of doing another set but diffused where you can't see the LEDs.

To be clear, yours have quite a large population of bulbs which does even them out a bit. And, they are behind a red lens correct? That helps to soften it up a bit. I still do like the diffused all over look though. It sort of looks like a glowing panel which is a neat trick.

Sadly no. The front side markers that I just made are behind crystal clear lenses with no diffuser but the ones that I think you are thinking of are the rear bumper reflector ones that I also had to seal while I was working with the other housings.

I am leaning towards a more diffused look vs spotted when I build the tails but it's a toss up on how diffused I want to go.

So far it's looking like:
*Diffused or behind tinted lenses. Just as long as individual LEDs are not exposed.
*Use amber for separate turns from brakes.
*Large brake light viewing area.

I think I can work with something like that. With the use of all LEDs I won't need the big bowls that are already in the housings so there would be plenty of room for whatever I can draw up.
