It is possible to change the headlights in a 3rd gen Mazda 6 without pulling the bumpers. Replaced all my head lamps with Sylvania SilverStar Ultras and got a decent uptick in light clarity.
On the driver's side, you can take the airbox cover off and have decent room to work with... with a catch. For the high beam, I found the easiest method was to remove the socket from the bulb first, then twist the bulb off. For the low beam, CAREFULLY twist the socket from the wire leads. Don't use any force whatsoever for risk of damaging the wires and/or the socket. If you have small hands, you might be able to reach back enough to properly turn the lamp out by the socket base. Note that I only took the airbox cover off. I imagine if you took the entire airbox off it would give you even more room to work with but I didn't feel like messing with the plumbing.
On the passenger side, simply remove the windshield washer reservoir neck bracket. It'll give you plenty of space to work with.

Hmm.. for just replacing the headlights, I don't have to make room for anything. I can just use my hand to pull the lights out and I have reasonable large hands ...

I just replaced all my front lights with COB Led's. Super nice light.
