I highly doubt that Mazda would bother with an Inline 6 design if they keep the transverse layout. It would probably be too wide. But...if it isn't too wide, it would be interesting to see which other vehicles use it. Certainly the CX9 would benefit...but the MX5...or would they call it...the MX7? Imagine a sportscar built on a modified MX5 chassis sporting that same inline 6...in true British sportscar fashion. But I digress. Let's stick to the real world. Rear wheel drive is entirely doable in a transverse engine setup and I do believe that Mazda needs to take that final step across the threshold and offer rear drive across the product lineup (yes, Mazda3 too) if they want to be considered the "BMW of Japan". Their words...not mine, because I actually prefer the build quality and reliability of my Mazda over my best friend's 328i. To achieve rear drive from a transverse installation, they could easily install the drivetrain from the AWD CX9 and delete the front-drive mechanicals. Ford did an experiment with this a few years back with the European Ford Escort RS2000 but eventually dropped the idea for unknown reasons.

It would really be great to see the 6 with an inline 6.
It would fit in quite fine...looking at cars like the Toyota Chaser/JZX90/JZX100 or Nissan Skylines....all are big'ish sedans with quite some power. Toyota with the 1JZ and 2JZ's and Nissan with their RB's.

I'd like the 6 to have a 3L twin turbo engine :-)
