There's been some advancement of the rotary engine since it last appeared in a RX8. That includes a reworked exhaust along with turbocharging. They are also looking at adopting HCCI (High Compression Combustion Igntion) to the mix, which will further help burn down particulates. All that being said, I wouldn't be surprised if CARB still took exception to it just because it's rotary.

As far as getting a high HP performance minded sports sedan, don't get your hopes up. The Chevrolet SS, which is for all intents and purposes an Americanized Holden Commodore HSV, is a dud. Lot of that is due to the cost of importing (it's a $55K sedan mind you). With sedans falling out of favor, I actually think Mazda would be better served tossing a reworked turbo in a CX5.

I don't like it at all.
I would have made it a rotary mid engined vehicle and moved the roofline forward and up.
