Help me work out this problem, I was out tonight and as I went to start my car to leave it wouldn't start, didn't even crank over just making a ticking sound, the lights still worked as did the other stuff but the car just wouldn't start, I gave it a push start and it started and ran perfect with lights on ect no drama at all, but when you turn it off wont start again? is that a battery or something else?

Ozzie - what you described sounds like a dead battery. The clicking is likely the solenoid inside the starter motor, trying to engage the flywheel. While the battery may still be capable of generating enough power to run your lights etc, it may not have enough left to turn the engine over.

Do you have access to a volt meter? If so, check the voltage across the battery terminals. It should be more than 12 volts DC with everything turned off.

Then, have someone crank the engine over and if the battery voltage drops below 10 volts DC, the battery is junk.

Good luck!

It might be the battery, The car lights and accesories dont require nearly as much power as the starter does. How long did you leave the lights on for? its possible they could stay on for a few mins while not having enough power to start.

I didn't leave the lights on for very long, just turned them on to see if they worked, i thought when your battery died, everything electrical died, shows i don't know anything .LOL

Send a message via AIM to pololance6i
sometimes if it's a ticking noise, you can just wiggle the battery cable as they might be loose. try that...and if that doesn't work...it's a dead battery.

Could be the starter. If your batt. checks out OK look at the starter next.
