It's a tight fit in there so make sure your skin is not getting in contact with the bulbs. Wear latex gloves. If there is contact, the oils from your skin will create a "hotspot" of sorts on the glass surface. This will cause the bulb to explode.

Actually it can. The film of oil will heat up and cool down that one spot everytime it gets turned on. Over time that part of the glass will be so stressed out it can explode.

I agree with the finger oils on it, if a mechanic did it, perhaps worse with the extra grime on their hands.

Could it also be something electrical? Perhaps too much going to the bulb?

This isn't the 1st time I've actually heard of this problem.

Oils on the bulb is one possibility. But, if you have any way of measuring the wattage going to the bulb, try that out.
