I mounted it behind the tail light housing, just below where the housing fits into the formed sheetmetal. It's a water tight area, and the heat won't effect anything.
Just checked my install recentlly, and after seven months: no ill effects from heat damage

I would like to see where you exactly mounted them too! I have them lying down outside of the tail housing between the truck carpeting and the body of the car. They seem fine there for now but im afraid 6 months down the road, they will burn through!
