because it has a chip in the key. you could buy one on ebay specifically for a mazda6 i guess and then program it yourself, which i think someone here or on 6tech should know how to do.

Is it similar to programing a remote? If so it is some combination of putting them in the car, turning the key to the on position, and hitting the door lock.... While patting your head and rubbing your stomach. But seriosly, if it is like the remote, there should be instructions in an old post here or at 6-tech.

you need 2 good keys in order to program it yourself. Otherwise, the dealer has a SST for it.

Someone correct me if im wrong tho.

03 6i MTX. 215/55-16 Kumho ASX, EBC green stuff, custom scored/fracturing rotors. Gutted airbox, crank mod, RPM short throw adapter, 2wheelin's fan mod. Sylfex aux-mod, concealed XM install, brake light mod, Redline 75w-90, Redline water wetter, and speed bleeders.
a half dozen UOAs. Currently on ~10k OCI.
suspect vacuum leak issue.
Note to self: no more adjustable wrenches.

I only paid $18 for a key and they cut it for free. I programmed it myself. It only took me less than a minute to program it. I wrote the instructions down somewhere I have to find it. I'll post it once I find it.

You need 2 keys to program the 3rd one.

Programming Instructions:

1. Using key 1, turn the ignition to ON position and observe illumination of the security light.
2. After the security light turns off (about 3 secs), then turn the key to the LOCK position within 4 secs and remove it.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 with key 2.
4. Repeat steps 1 and 2 with key 3 (key to be programmed)
5. If the security light stops blinking after 3 secs after being on the ON position; it works.
