you need to pay the dealer to program the key for you.

The idea is, if you lost your keys, and your car was stolen. The theif would only have one good key. The car can only be reprogrammed by the dealer, and the theif would have to prove to the dealer that they are the actual owner. And they won't be able to do that beause it was stolen.

Now, if you're the owner, you should have 3 keys (2 master and 1 valet). If you lost one of the keys, you still have 2 keys, and thus it is assumed (by the car) that you are the propper owner, and thus you don't need to have the dealer program it.

Hope that wasn't too convoluted.

for those who are like me and just got dumbfounded. the 04 keys are lil difrent. I almost want one after seeing the difrence myself. The key is shaped more like a luxury car. I am seriously thinking of converting over to the 04 keys. does the 04 valet keys look like the black keys?

I have an '03 6, and my key is the ugly little rubber head one. I bought an '04 key to see if it would work with the '03 6. The dealership told me the '04 key wouldn't work on my car. I took a chance of buying it and seeing for myself. It was only $17.50 so I didn't really care. I programmed it and it worked on my car. The '04 valet key looks exactly the same as the master key, except the mazda logo is chrome. It's just all black.
