any opinions on the standard alarm/immobilizer systems on the V6 GT? how do they work? are they adequate or will an aftermarket alarm need to be installed?

Well, if your car is stock it should be ok. People have said the shock sensor(extra option) is not that great. But the car itself has to have the key to start its one of the "chip" in key designs. The car itself is not probably a car that is going to be stollen alot but who knows. But if you put lots of aftermarket stuff in the car like Amps, subs, tv's... I would definatly think about upgrading.
