The headlights turn off after the car is turned off for a minute or so.

Is there a way to deactivate this feature (or better, to let me turn it on and off at will)? Last night was the third time I shut off the car (to save fuel), while talking with someone for a few minutes, but wanted to leave the headlights on to illuminate the walk. The lights shut off when I still wanted them on.

I realize this is a battery saving feature, but why not make it user selectable?

It is selectable. Leave your key in ignition with the engine off.
