My Speedometer is off

Took a long trip this weekend.... took my GPS with me, and I noticed that my speedometer is off by 2-3 mph.. to slow. If i get it up to where the needle is on 70 it will say 68 on the GPS.

I have the stock 17's so its not my wheels being off..

In my truck the GPS was right on with my speedometer... if the GPS said i was doing 55 my needle was right at 55.

anyone got any ideas?

The speedo would be off since the gauge cluster is almost certainly set for a base 16" wheel.

2 to 3 mph is miniscule and any number of things can affect it.

Not so. The stock 16s and 17s end up being the same size when considering the entire wheel/tire combo.

I don't believe it's your speedo, i think it's a matter of GPS not being perfectly accurate. I know that it is supposed to be within 3-5 meters but more realisticly about 15 meters or more. I'd figure that would throw it off a bit.

I thought I had read that this is because the military only lets the public use so much of the bandwidth from the satellites.

Someone chim in if they know more about this stuff.

Yeah i realize that,

but if thats the case... why would it be almost 99% accurate in other vehicles?

I'll back you on that fuzzbear, My speedo is out too according to my GPS, I'd say about 5%, at a constant cruising speed of 85mph on the gps the mazda's would read 91. It is at constant cruising speeds that the GPS is more accurate, cause when your accelerating or deccelerating there is a second or so delay.
And yeah in other cars I used it in, I'd get different results.

It may be worth mentioning that many GPS systems do not include altimeters, and thus will realistically never calculate your speed accurately (unless maybe you live somewhere in Nebraska). As you and your car travel up or down a small hill, the GPS will only measure the lateral component of your travel. Thus, in most real-world situations the GPS will report your speed as slightly lower than your carís speedo.

Don't you just love how those "SPEED BOXES" or "SPEED SIGNS" inform you that your only going 76-77mph when your speedo says 80...

Then you go past a Farva a mile further and he 'says' you were actually doing 81? :angry What are you going to say? I was only doing 76?...yeah, then he writes you up for 76 instead and saves you $10...big deal

nooOOOooo....there sure aint no abuse there with taking advantage of drivers as a source of revenue...(sarcastic)
