I used 7440 and the turn signals worked fine. The end part that you plug in didn't fit perfectly, but it did work. When you were refering to "fat" did you mean the end of the bulb where it plugs in to the socket or the bulb itself? It you were refering the end, try turning on your signal lights with it in, it might work; It did for me.
