actually the 2.3L has NOTHING to do with ford whatsoever.

and the 3.0L is a Mazda version of the Duratec, it is not the same exact engine

Misinformed, eh?

"After four generations of maturation and development, and considerable help from Ford Motor Company, the zoom-zoom guys have really put a fine point on it this time."

That's a quote from jb car pages:
http://mazda.jbcarpages.com/6/2003/

Of course that does't mention engines now does it?

I did a little more research, and it appears that these ARE new engines.

New engines that just happen to have almost the same bore, stroke and compression, (in the case of the V6,) and the EXACT SAME bore, stroke and compresion, (In the case of the I4,) as their FoMoCo Predecessors.

Oh, that's 3.44" bore by 3.7" stroke and 9.7 to 1 compression for the Pinto, oops, I mean Mazda 2.3L, and 3.5" bore by 3.13" stroke and 10 to 1 compression for the V6.

Just in case you were wondering.

That's not the Ford Duratec, (Overhead Valve) that the Mazda V6 is derived from, but the Ford Vulcan V6 (Dual Overhead Cam).

But please feel free to tell me where I am misinformed.

No really, I'd rather believe that I am driving an Mazda Atenza than a sooped up Taurus or Contour.

But we're way off topic now...

Anyway,

The first dealership didn't seem to give a rats ass about us, and according to the dealership that is working on our car now, they didn't even reflash the CPU like they said they did.

The current dealership is going nuts on my car, running all sorts of diagnostic tests. They said that they currently believe that the problem is in some sort of drive-by-wire throttle sensor that is attached to the accelorator pedal.

I will hopefully have my car back soon. I am really sick of this Grand Am rental.

Calibration for this car was done fully by Mazda, so even if it is a Ford engine (not saying it is or isn't, just if) - the strategy is fully Mazda. So, all these computer related issues would lie primarily on Mazda's shoulders.

Another issue at play could be a screw up from the assembly plant at Flat Rock where our UAW/Auto Alliance friends made the car. No one is perfect, and sometimes assembly people make mistakes, no matter which car plant they work for. Loose wiring somewhere?

And to give my own story of Ford products - my mom's Mercury with the 3.0L V6 from 1994 went to 203K with only the alternator having an issue once. Although, I'm sure we could debate all day with stories of Fords that lived long lives, and some that died early deaths...

I'll have to concede the point to NoBull, and as I said before, GM and Chrysler make plenty of lemons, too.

Honda is praised all over for their reliability and longevity, but the Accord we test drove died three times just going around the block. Wasn't gas or clutch, just a POS.

Just to beat a dead horse a little more,

If the Mazda 2.3L I4 is not the venerable 2.3L I4 that Ford has put in so many vehicles, (To include the Mazda B2300 truck,) then how come the Duratec Perfomance website that is linked to this very site lists the following for the Mazda 6?

hmmm...

As far as my understanding goes NoBrakes, it is that the V6 is the ford duratec BLOCK, but the internals are Mazda designed or tweaked. You will not find an engine exactly like this in any ford, period (well to date, wait till the Futura comes out). As for the I4, I heard that Ford gave Mazda the project to develope a new I4 (probably using an exisiting block), and thats what they did. Correct me if wrong guys.

Okay, I could buy that Mazda started with Vulcan (DOHC) shortblock, or a Duratec shortblock with the I4, (And despite my earlier slam, even the current Ford 2.3L is far better than the one that lived in the Pinto.)

If Mazda engineers finished off the top end, then that would explain the significant increase in HP over the FoMoCo engines.

I'd love to see what Mazda could do the 5.4L cammer V8, Mazdaspeed 6 anyone?

Or maybe a really sick version of the GT40? Of course, that's Ford's Flagship, but I can dream, can't I?
