Thumbs up AutoX Shakedown

In preparation for returning to track duty, we headed to the local Autocross in hopes of really working the suspension, engine and brakes. Better to find any problems here than out on the track.

Here's the first run - let's just say when you charge into the first turn and the brakes don't work as you expect, well . . .

Second run - definitely something wrong with the rear brakes . . .

Finally, I remembered I had pulled the ABS fuse when I was working on the car (doh!). Third run WITH ABS . . .

Everything went smoothly thereafter until the 9th run. We started leaking coolant - the cap I had placed on the heater hose outlet was leaking. No big deal.

All in all, a fun day. We'll do at least two more before heading to VIR.

Bye.

My wife wonders why I like Mazdas so much. If she only had one, she wouldn't need to ask.

I took my brother along to co-drive - I wanted to get as many runs as possible on the car. We got 5 runs each. Lots of good info.

Tires were another issue - the rears were harder than the fronts. Plus the rear sway was set at the stiffest setting. Result was significant oversteer. You can see it in the third video on the long RH sweeper after the first turn-around. Not sure if it was the different tire compound or the rear swaybar. Next event we'll have a new, matched set of tires - then we'll play with the rear sway.

The car is on the lift now - I'll be checking and torquing everything before the next event.

Eye Candy!

I like this one - it shows the neg camber in the front wheels.

This one shows that even as the suspension compresses, we don't lose any neg camber in the front - infact, we might gain a bit.

Be careful - two wheels in the grass is a DNF!

This a little more body roll than I'd like.

Other pics . . .

Where did you end up for camber anyway? Those pics give it a look of about -3

And I love the "2 in the grass" pic.
That one speaks to me...

Static setting is -2.5 at all four wheels. I can go up to -3.5 in the front and -4 in the rear (static). The suspension gains neg camber as it compresses - I plotted a camber curve in my Track Car Prep thread (post #162). I'm guessing at the compression you see in the second pic - it is about -3.5 degrees. I'd like to do some skidpad testing to determine optimum settings.

Made a more permanant fix to the coolant leak - it seems fine now. Also, after all my bragging about how my 285s don't rub (how do you guys put up with me ) turns out I was wrong. The pics don't lie - it was definitely rubbing on the sharp inside edge of the fender during full compression.

I don't have a fender rolling machine so I used the tried-and-true baseball bat method. It takes two people - that can communicate well. If you've never seen it done, this youtube vid (not mine) will give you the general idea.

Next AutoX is in a couple weeks!

Awesome stuff man. Thanks for sharing. By the way, have you thought about a GoPro? I built a custom mount for mine and I get a lot less rear view mirror in my shot haha. Seriously though, that video was great. The real time speedo and lap position was very cool.
