Installing 2016 CX-5 Head unit in 2014-15 Mazda 6

I just had this crazy idea and thought would share with all you creative people

Considering dashboard housing for 2016 CX-5 headunit and 2014/15 Mazda 6 is almost similar (if not completely), it will be possible to purchase and install 2016 CX-5 HU in 2014/15 Mazda 6?

Thoughts?

There might be a few things that wouldnt hook up correctly, like the bluetooth dongle and maybe a different power connector. I'm not sure of the exact size, you would have to measure it.

Navigation would also likely not hook up, but of all of this I am not sure.

I am sure there has to be a way to work around it. Just waiting for someone to try this out. It'd be very interesting.

The cost of swapping in the CX5 headunit is probably not worth your time or money... Your warranty will still be "void", bluetooth dongle will not hookup, you will need a new harness/center console w/ the new commander unit, and any existing navi unit will not work.

But I'm pretty sure the main radio harness is plug and play.

Price-wise... Commander unit is about $300 and the headunit is $700... And that's for the crappy 2015 stuff. Add in a center console and harness and any other labor... You're better off buying an aftermarket headunit like I did.

Which one do you use? I am looking forward to Parrot RNB6.

Honestly, I wouldnt be surprised if its all the same connections. Unless someone has tried it and it didnt work, theres so many parts that seem interchangeable that im willing to bet it would work fairly easily. Not to say Id spend the money to find out, but if you have one for free/cheap, it might be worth giving it a shot.

but as said, an aftermarket one will be cheaper and have more features. Im using a Pioneer Appradio 3. It was awesome with my old rooted galaxy s3 bc I could run an app called appradio unchained that essentially turned the headunit into a tablet and I could control every function of my phone from the touch screen. Thanks to the att note 4 being a PITA to root, havnt been able to use it in a few months

Anyone ever find out more info on this now that I'm sure there are some totaled '16 CX-5s out there that have been parted out?

This one would be an interesting project. The 2014-15 headunit was a joke. It was outdated even when it was released. The 2014 Mazda3 Infotainment beats it in every department including the screen size
