Your best bet for inexpensive, good performing speakers would most like be Boston Acoustics. They are no longer producing car audio, so everything out there is on sale.
A number for a budget would be good. If spending in the $500 area, I would look into a strong 4 channel amp some good components in the front. Use the front two channels of the amp to power a set of components run passive and bridge the remaining two channels of the amp for a subwoofer. Youd be using the 4 channel amp as a 3 channel. That would be the easiest and cheapest thing to do and would satisfy most people.
