Firmware on 6 speed ATX on 2005 wagon

How can I tell if my ATX has the latest firmware? I read somewhere of something buying a used Wagon with a 6 speed ATX and it not shifting right and the remedy was to re-flash the tranny with a firmware update.

I would try a through replacement of the trans fluid before doing any firmware changes.
I am under the impression that only the dealer (specialist) can interface and verify that information.
Good luck.
