Finally got the Android Auto/Apple Car Play upgrade at the dealer

I recently traded in my 2015 Mazda6 iSport for a 2018 Mazda6 Grand Touring. Yesterday I finally got the Android Auto/Apple Car Play upgrade performed at my local Mazda dealership. I am very happy with it. One thing that is a bit disappointing is that the touch screen doesn't work on Android Auto at all, not just when the car is moving. This is not a big deal for me because I rarely use the touch screen anyway. The commander knob works so well, and when you learn how to use it from muscle memory, it is amazing. Pressing the "home" button on the commander knob brings you to the main menu of AA. Pressing the "Nav" button automatically opens up Google Maps. I am very happy. Spotify integration works seamlessly. Also, as you know, Android Auto makes you use voice commands to enter a destination into Google Maps (or the clunky typing by scrolling the commander knob if you are parked), but if you unplug the phone, begin a route on Google Maps, re-connect to the car, and go into Maps, the destination will remain and you can begin your route. You will be able to unlock your phone and use it while driving, but you cannot open Google Maps. Overall, I am very happy. Feel free to ask me any questions about the system. I have not used Apple Car Play yet, but I do have an iPhone as well (work phone), so I will be checking that out soon as well.

The entire process took less than 45 minutes, including the car wash they put my car through when they were finished.

i just had it installed in my '17. question:
is it a fact that android auto does not work unless the phone is physically plugged into usb? why on earth would it not work wirelessly via bluetooth?

in the year 2018, $500 is a lot of money for something you have to plug in...

Android auto is not wireless you have to plug your phone it is the same thing in other manufacturer(acura, hyundai, hon da...).
Bwm offer wireless connection but only if you use apple carplay.

I had this installed yesterday on my 2016 Touring. Still getting the interface figured out, but so far I'm very pleased.

I wasn't concerned about losing the touchscreen, as I almost never use it anyways. However, I did notice the Waze interface is a little clunky with the commander knob. It's sometimes difficult to tell which button is highlighted...have to scroll around a bit to make sure I'm selecting the right button when entering a destination. Minor issue though, will just take a little time to get comfortable.

The phone feels just slightly slower to connect/resume when I start up the car. Not a huge difference though.

The rapid charging is a huge improvement. I've always used a USB charger in the car, rather than the built-in jacks, as they're far too slow. Nice to be able to connect directly to the infotainment system and still charge.

The overall interface feels really clean and modern. Voice commands seem to work much better than with the OEM system. The tighter integration with audio apps is nice...I only ever used bluetooth before, and the system was sometimes buggy about displaying track information, skipping tracks, etc. Looks to be a much more consistent experience so far, at least based on the first couple hours of use.

I don't have the CarPlay upgrade yet. With the stock system I've been having frequent USB connectivity issues with my iPhone 6 and now iPhone XR. The phone often will not connect at all. Or, I get an "Authentication Failure" message.

In my wife's 2011 Hyundai, we had similar issues with USB connectiviti. Upgrading to an aftermarket CarPlay head unit seemed to resolve that.

Did you notice any issue with connecting after the upgrade? I've tried multiple ports and different USB cords, so I feel like the stock software just isn't as reliable as a CarPlay interface.

I had some instability with my iPhone 7 at first. Some disconnections and even a phone reboot.

Everything went away when I changed my cheap cable with the apple cable that came with the phone.

For the record, it was a cheap micro usb cable with a lightning adapter... A recipe for disaster!

Pardon my ignorance, but backing up a little:

So, this is a dealer option for about $500?
Seems like just a software upgrade, or ??

Is this distinct from any sort of updates/upgrades to Mazda Connect?

Mazda Connect

Thanks!
