What Mod's are actually worth spending money on?

Straight up, I don't care about sound. In fact I like my car being as quiet as it is. What I do care about is power. I have been getting conflicting information and I was wondering if someone could help set me straight before I go and disappointing blow a couple grand.

Common thing I'm reading is that an exhaust wont net you any gains. It's purely a sound add on. For 1000CDN I can live with the stock sound happily. I'm 39 years old and really don't have any desire to sound like a ricer heading into work.

An intake is only going to net you 5 HP. Again for 400 CDN, 5 HP really doesn't seem worth it for again, sound. Especially at 1500 for 8HP combined.

So that leaves me with a tune, and this seems like the "best bang for the buck" $600 for 20 ish HP. This I could justify.

However will the tune give me noticeably larger gains WITH the exhaust and intake over stock? Is at this point it worth spending the extra 1500?

From what I've seen over the years. Adding a tune on top of intake/exhaust upgrade will give you a decent boost. You'll be able to be more aggressive with the tune when you have other mods done. I'm not sure about the exact numbers though.

There's only so much you're going to be able to increase these little engines. More air in and more air out will help, but what the tune really does for you is give you that much needed low-end torque. You won't be pulling huge numbers, but it will FEEL like you are because it's not dogging in the first 3k RPMS like it does out of the box.

Totally understandable. Hopefully not to contradict myself too much, the low end is really what I'm after. It's real world driving I'm after, and the law only allows me to go so fast. I'm not against spending the money on an exhaust per se, I just would like it to sound a little more mature and actually give some benefit.

The only readily available aftermarket cat back in Canada is a magnaflow. From what I have heard "With as much justice as youtube can do" It's quite raspy and loud and not at all what I'm looking for. Plus I have read about a noticeable drone on cruising. So that leave's me with ordering across the border(Tanabe+Corksport). Given Exchange, Shipping, Customs.. it quickly inflates the price on something I'm not totally sure I'll like the sound of once it's installed. So it has me boggled really on what to do.

Once my 6MT GX (Sport) is broken in I will go for only the OVT tune, possibly optimized for 89 octane fuel, with a "bottom-end" emphasis. Particularly if your car is an A/T car i personally wd not go for much if any exhaust mods.

Ya, I've been reading through the OVtune thread with Solar's car and the exhaust does not seem to be having any or very minimal effect even post tuning. Definately not $1000+ worth to me anyway.

I have read some differences with using an intake though. The AEM one utilizes the factory air scoop, it's a dry filter and has a heat sheild. So I think I may spring for that and the tune and call it a day.

I'm mentioning @tickerguy here because it sounds like you want what he has. He's got nothing but the OVTune and still running (very efficiently) on normal 87, but he's got that much-needed low end torque and can't praise it enough. Been on it over 100k miles with not a single issue.

Thanks @Byakuya. I have read a lot of Tickerguy's posts as well (pg44 of 113 in the ovtune thread). I'll end up tuning for 93, he said he did notice an increase in the higher octane map. I don't put a lot of KM's on so the cost of the fuel isn't really a factor for me. I've ordered an AEM intake so far. It uses the existing scoop from the hood. Ticker is probably going to "tsk" at me lol, but the way I see it.. by not ordering an exhaust I have just saved $1000+. :P I'll be ordering the tune next week.

I have both the 87 and 92 (we don't get 93 here) map but I haven't used 92 more than a handful of times. The problem is the cost of the fuel; around here it's typically 50 cents/gal or more (!) than 87, and there's just no way I'm paying that for the relatively small, but real, improvement that I can obtain with the 92 tune. Now if I was going to spend some time on the track, yeah, I'd load it first.

As for the AEM IMHO you're not getting anything and might be giving up some of the (excellent) stock filtering capability. Having run enough miles in varying conditions at this point I cannot find any reason to play with the excellent filtration capacity that you get with the OE air filter -- it's outstanding in terms of keeping crap out of your engine and does so without any measurable restriction on airflow.

Thanks Tickerguy. I had actually cancelled my intake order. Buyer's remorse as soon as I clicked the buy button. So I knew it wouldn't get any better once it shipped and I was stuck with it. Plus with it being open, and not in a sealed box it just made me question it.

So for now I think it's a OvTune for 93 and that's it. (We get 94 here, so I could use 93 or 91 in a pinch)

Just to be clear on the Ovtuned site, it's the $559 option correct? "Mazda tuning kit, SkyActive"
