Official: Mazda6 2.2L Sky-Activ Diesel Delayed until April 2014 Release

Okay diesel heads (like me),...as the title says, don't hold you breathe. The M6D will be delayed till 2nd qtr 2014.

Mazda6 diesel delayed until April

Diesel enthusiasts waiting on the new Skyactiv-D-powered Mazda6 will have to wait a bit longer. The shapely fuel-efficient four-door has just had its North American launch pushed back to April, due to delays in emissions testing. Mazda had originally planned to launch the Mazda6 diesel before the end of this year, making the four- to five-month delay a rather serious one.

Mazda's senior vice president of US operations, Robert Davis, told Mazda employees in a letter obtained by Automotive News that, "final certification testing - the results of which are looking encouraging - is taking longer than we had initially expected." Following this letter, Mazda made an official announcement:
"The on-sale date for Mazda6 SKYACTIV-D clean-diesel has been moved to late-Spring 2014, to accommodate final emissions testing and certification. We are pleased with the ongoing development and are excited to launch this much-anticipated vehicle in North America. 2014 Mazda6 sales continue to exceed both our expectations and our production abilities, and supplies of the car are short at dealers across the U.S. More information on the SKYACTIV-D clean diesel Mazda6 will be available closer to the on-sale date."
Mazda is set to become the only Japanese manufacturer in the North American diesel game when the 6 arrives. The brand, which has famously eschewed hybrid technology in favor of its Skyactiv philosophy, favoring lightweight, highly efficient components in the name of saving fuel, made waves when it announced the 2.2-liter turbodiesel. In a way, the fuel-sipping powerplant takes the place of a larger V6 in the Mazda6 lineup, generating just 173 horsepower, but compensating with 310 pound-feet of torque.

The delay in certification will lead to dealers getting an additional 4,000 gas-powered Mazda6s to make up for the lack of diesel early in 2014.

Taking more time for testing and certification is a code word for fixing defects.. There is plenty of speculation regarding this already:

I saw that on G+ over the weekend. The article seems a bit contradictory on teh release timing, stating that it has been delayed "until April". Yet Mazda indicates in the statement that it has been delayed until "Late-Spring".

Since Summer begins June 21, I took it to mean the delay would be until late-May to Early-June. Maybe just symantics....

You hit the nail on the head. Mazda is trying to resolve the issue regarding fuel dilution and crankcase levels rising. Of course Mazda (or any car company for that matter) will not admit publicly to that, so they spin it and claim it's about California emissions. Which is completely a lie because it does not take another 11 months to do that.

The diesel has serious issues and is going back to the engineering drawing board. This is a fact that a Mazda insider has told me. Mazda didn't want the bad PR that is hitting them in other parts of the world with the diesel. So they decided to delay the US diesel in an attempt to redesign and fix the Mazda diesel before it is released in the USA.

I think this is the better route to go, rather than releasing a flawed diesel in the US that would destroy Mazda's image here in the USA. Not to mention the lemon law and financial disaster that would come from a flawed diesel release into the US market. Such a move could have easily financially destroyed Mazda here in the USA.

Also, the earliest the diesel will be seen here in the USA is June 2014. Nothing earlier than that. That is if everything goes 100% to plan. Most likely the diesel will emerge around August 2014 here in the USA.
