05 6S 3.0 Starter cross year compatibility

Pinion every so often not retracting quick enough so I figured time to swap out starter.

I'm looking for verification of "starter" year interchangeability for 05 S GT 6cyl auto trans.

Pulled a starter from an 04 6S 6 cyl auto wagon today at the local Pull-A-Part.
Seems many items in first gen are interchangeable.

Tonight though while online looking at new starters for both years I was getting conflicting results on whether or not they were the same.
Some result indicated they were interchangeable while some were not.
Yes, I was referencing 6S 6 cyl auto for all searches and did not confuse with straight drive in results.

Didn't want to pull existing starter until I have further confirmation.
Thanks.

I think the main issue will be if you have a 5-speed (Jatco) or 6-speed (Aisin) ATX. The transmission and the exhaust are the two main variations with the early 1st generation (Mk. 1). After the facelift (Mk. 1.5), late 1st gen, you may have body panel and wiring issues to deal with. Most things are interchangeable however.

^^^^what he said ^^^^
It should work as long as you get the starter from one with the same ATX

Thanks guys.
The starter in my sedan is the AJ34 M001T96581. I was able to take picture of label without removing the starter.
It's the 6 speed ATX.

The starter I pulled from the wagon was an AJ51 M001T96681.

I had initially referenced jimellismazda which with a side by side search resulted in exact same part numbers.
I'll be taking the starter back this week (they have 30 day return for credit).

An interesting not is that every site I went to for part number lookup lists the same one for all years 03-08. Unless they standardized something for the rebuild it may be that they all use the same standardized Mitsubishi unit.

To clarify my earlier post, I don't actually have first hand knowledge they are different.

JimEllis lists the one you pulled from salvage as a manual transmission application.

In this case it's just best to get one local from store.

85% of the local yards have only the 6i models anyway.
I did go back and look at some online parts stores and the main thing that stuck out as the orientation of the solenoid.

While irrelevant the AJ51 had posts in 3&9 o'clock with ignition switch terminal at 12 and the AJ43 was rotated 90 clockwise.
The wiring does vary slightly with the post connecting to the harness.
Who knows, gear teeth may be different or just mount itself.

I also looked up jimellismazda again and tonight I do see differences of part numbers that I didn't see the other night and I agree with you DrFeelGood.

When I selected the cars to pull the starter from I performed a 2 check 1- verified 6 cylinder 2- verified it's an ATX.
Now I couldn't have made a boneheaded move on both cars.....could I?
Iv'e been driving straight drive for the past 40+ years and continue to still daily.
When I return the starter I'll go back to verify whether I am a bonehead or not.

Well, I went to the salvage yard today and returned the starter.
I took a quick stroll back to the 04 wagon I pulled the starter from to verify whether or not I'm a bonehead.
Was I a bonehead?...no, no I was not a bonehead. The wagon was still an automatic.
The AJ51 M001T96681 was installed in the automatic.

Huh... It may have worked. Always a chance trying and there is the added work as well but the part numbers are fairly ambiguous so maybe...

Just to follow up, the 2004 w/ atx starter AJ51 M001T96681 has it's bolt through holes and mount studs staggered from one side to the other.
My 05 with the AJ34 M001T96581 starter has the bolt through holes and mount studs mirrored from one side to the other.
So no, the 2004 6 6cly w/ atx starter is not compatible with the 2005 6 6cly w/ atx.

Ended up taking the starter to a local auto electric shop here in Charlotte, NC.
Great shop, fair cost for service.
