Exclamation Photos of 2009 Mazda6 sub frame corrision leading to failure of steering

Some pics of my 2009 Mazda6 sub frame. It cracked by braking and the steering immediately drifted. Had to rotate wheel 180 degrees just to keep going straight.

Ugh! Those pics look way too familiar...

You looking to get it fixed? It'll be at least a 30-45 day wait (if they need parts from Japan) and run about $2K, depending on any other collateral damage...

I will see what the dealer has to say tomorrow, and Mazda Canada too. This is a real safety issue since it can easily result in a fatal accident and 2009 Mazda6 owners aren't aware that their cars need immediate inspection and may be too dangerous to drive. Mazda recalled this car for rust under the door -- and this is far more serious. This car was sprayed with Rust Check and Canadian Tire's Rust Cure so it wasn't neglected. If Mazda recalls the frame, I will keep the vehicle. If they want to charge me thousands, then I will scrap it and Mazda will permanently lose a customer.

Even if Mazda doesn't want to pay the cost of a recall, they need to alert owners that this section of the car should be inspected by the dealer immediately. I reported this to Transport Canada.

Uh, yeah.

That's REAL serious stuff there. You're damn lucky that didn't happen on the highway; it would have been very, very bad news.

That's an 09? We're talking less than 10 years and the subframe was destroyed by ordinary environmental exposure?

Uh.....

Mazda Canada offered to pay for the towing to a dealer (2009 Mazda 6, photos elsewhere on this thread), a rental car while waiting for a new front sub-frame (at least a month), a free sub frame and some install labor. Dealer states that because of rust, the labor offered by Mazda will likely be insufficient, so the whole thing might end up costing $300. Overall, I think this is fair -- Mazda effectively covering > 90% of the overall expense.

Sequence is this:

1) Notify Mazda of your concern. The will likely offer to pay for a tow, especially if your steering is compromised. The dealer will not usually pay for incoming tow service.

2) Call your dealer. They have likely already replaced a few Mazda6 sub frames. They cannot promise anything until they see the car, take photos and get formal approval from Mazda (takes a few days).

3) If Mazda offers to cover a car rental, ask the dealer if they can provide a car for that amount. They will likely have a good relationship with someone like Enterprise who will accept Mazda's daily rate, especially for a rental of a month or more. Let the dealer handle the transaction if possible so that you don't have to pay and try to get your money back.

4) When calling for a tow, tell them it isn't urgent so that you don't pay the emergency rate. If you don't mind waiting several hours, you will get a lower rate.

Front subframe recall coming.

"On September 14, 2018 Mazda Motor Corporation notified the National Highway Transportation Administration (NHTSA) to conduct a recall for a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety that exists in approximately 48,814 2009-2010 Mazda6 vehicles sold or ever registered in “Salt States”.

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified of this recall by first class mail no later than November 12, 2018."

Please do not bombard your local dealer with questions on this. First, there are no parts available for the recall yet. Second, this JUST arrived in my inbox about 10 minutes ago. I assure you that very few people monitor their email like I do and salesmen, in particular, know nothing about this kind of thing and they are the ones that usually answer the phone.

Hold your cars until November. If you have already dealt with this problem, politely explain your situation to the service manager at that time and you will be taken care of.

If they do go through and take major steps to fix decade-old cars, then Mazda will have officially become the nicest car company in the history of the world.
