Mazda offers the 6 in AWD outside of the US so a RWD isn't that big of a stretch. But I don't think that will happen. What I think has a better chance of happening sooner than later - dropping in the CX-9's engine preferably with AWD. That could be a nice way to end this gen with a bang. I would literally drive to my dealer and throw money at them if that happened. Hell, I'd bake them cookies, too.

Here's the link: Test Drives | Orange County Auto Show. You're right - they've got the 2018 Mazda 3 and 2018 Mazda 6 listed. Very strange, given dealer confirmations of a 2017.5 model/

Earlier this month, when I asked Mazda Customer Care about the 2018 6, the rep that responded told me to check back at the end of next month (which would be October) about details on that model. From that timeframe, I assumed at the time that he was hinting at a possible unveil at the Tokyo Auto Show.

Also, IMHO, I would think that the 2017.5 would be exactly the same cosmetically as the 2017 but with the new safety features that have already been announced as being standard on all 2018 models.

As a newbie here, I didn't go through all 24 pages, but I just bought a 6. I looked, shopped and researched most of the competition.
I also looked at the CX-5 and comparable CUV's.
In my estimation, the 2017 Mazda6 is every bit as current as anything else out there.
Yes, Toyota and Honda released a new Camry and Accord, but have you actually looked at those things? Fugly, to say the least.
The Accord also dropped their V6 and coupe. Base drivetrain is now a 90 cubic inch (1.5L) turbo, through a CVT.
Would you really choose that combo over the Mazda 2.5L natural aspirated engine and 6 speed auto? Not me.
From what I've heard, a new new ground up Mazda 6 is still a little ways away. I believe they'll just tweak the current design a bit to keep it fresh.
That's what they've been doing every year.
Happy motoring.

I made some time last minute and went. The model on display was a 2017.5. This is confirmed for sure. I also talked to a test driver rep and she said it was a 2018 but also said the discrepancy could be from miscommunication between corporate and the dealers.

Were you able to take any photos of the car itself?

Yeah any photos. And any info on what changes there were except for safety?

Unfortunately no, but it doesn't look different from the 2017 from what I've seen. From earlier in the thread, I believe most of the changes are the addition of safety features.
