Hi all -

I'm checking out a used Mazda6, and I was looking for some insight.

My current car:
1999 Mercury Cougar 2.5L V6 mtx built 10/98
Bought new
116,000 miles
Why I am looking at different cars: it's getting old and giving me problems - needs new uim and lim gaskets now, tires in a couple of months, brakes not far down the road...it starts to add up
Why I'm not looking at new cars: my checkbook is empty

The car I'm looking at:
2004 Mazda6 s mtx
I haven't been able to find many used cars around here with manual transmissions that aren't to the age/mileage that mine is
Price: marked down to 13,995 on the lot
55,000 miles
leather
Bose
Listed here

So, what common problems should I be aware of? I haven't gone to test drive it yet, but I test drove a new 06 last year.

Thanks for the help - Cara Jo

Well first off Welcome to the club.

I was in you same situation just under a week ago. I had a 00 Blazer and traded it in on a 04 Sport Wagon. Best damn decision I ever made. I couldnt be happier. Granted we havent had a big snowfall yet but I am sure it will be just fine. I say drive it, if you like it, go for it. You wont be sorry.

I traded in a 1999 Mercury Cougar for a 2004 Mazda 6. I have no regrets.

Definitely knock that price down. I wouldn't pay more than $12.5K, without including the trade-in.

Other than that, make sure the clutch is in good shape, and that it's got any and all recalls/software updates.

Good luck.

Def. see if you can get that price down. I bought my 04 6 s MTX with similar features (No bose) for $16,400 with only 13K . This car has 4 x that mileage , which should bring you down to about $12.5 thousand as Ghost said.

Good luck

Agreed, you should be able to get that for $12K. Other than that, the 6 is a GREAT car. You'll love it.

give me a PM sometime, I may be looking to sell my 6s soon for a speed6...

2004 6s mtx onyx black about 65k miles...Sport Package, Leather, HID's...see it all in my sig i think. Still has remaining 5 yr/100k mazda warranty left, so your looking at like 1.5 years and 35k on that. Also just got new Hawk Pads and rotors that will put on as soon as they arrive. Not sure how you feel about intake and what not, but still have all the OEM parts and get turn back to that if needed. Edmunds True Market Value thing put it at like 12.5-13k i think. If you wanted it with everything as is and since still has decent amount of total coverage warranty I would be looking to sell at like 13.5-14k range. Its in excellent condition, no scratches, synthetic oil change, washed atleast weekly...

I am not sure what they value warranty's at but they are a nice piece of mind to have and bring atleast some safety net when buying used cars, but if anyone wants to throw out what they think is reasonable for car without part out, and with warranty, please let me know because i am just going off KBB and Edmunds here and they dont do modding and such into price(which i know at a dealer lowers price, but not for someone who wants it :-) )...

Well, I test drove the car today and...I pick it up on Wednesday. I KBB'd it, and the results are close to 16K. They wouldn't knock the price down more than a few hundred. (They want it gone by March 1, and I was able to make that possible.)

It's IMMACULATE. 1 owner, in CT, 17" wheels, power driver's seat... I'm excited about the new car, but sad that I have to sell the Cougar now. (It's not worth anything as trade in - I will be happy to get double trade in on my own, I'm asking for more.) The Cougar was my first car, I bought it brand new, so it's just tough to hand over the keys.

Thanks for the welcome!

Can't believe they had the car priced that high. The dealership I do business with in Ohio had a 2004 6s with 36K miles, MTX, bose, moonroof for $14,500....

Welcome to the club, a few 6 club members will be in Lime Rock for the races in the Summer, you should join us

Great to see you got the 6, I liked the Merc Cougar when it came out and remember HotRod mag having a custom super charged cougar made that pulled some great numbers. You will love your 6 way better epecially an mtx good choice.
