Ok. I need new tires soon. Cannot get the Continental Extremecontact DWS set because they are backordered until next year and i need them sooner than that. Bridgestone Potenzas are out of my price range. I am torn between the Kumho Ecsta 4X and the General G-MAX AS-03. I like them both and they are about the same price. May not make a difference but the size is 225/45R18 on a set of RX-8 wheels and driving in the standard IL weather (ie shit).
Any opinions on them? I just can't figure out which set to get.

I had a set of Kuhmo tires on a previous car and enjoyed them. Never used either of those exact tires but did have a good experiance with Kuhmo so they get my vote.

235/40s will probably fit the RX8s better & the DWS in that size is in stock at Tirerack.

I saw that on there but I just like the way the 225/45 look. Plus, idk if the 235/40 size will give me rubbing issues. I have already had them with the current 225/45.

The 225/45 has a diameter of 26in & width of 8.9in while the 235/40 has width of 25.4 & width of 9.5, so it might be wider tire, but will give you 1/2in more fender gap, which may reduce the rubbing. You should roll your fenders with RX8s anyways.

Between the Kumhos and Generals, I'd get the Generals. I've been hearing nothing but great things about the Generals lately. The Kumhos are also probably a good choice, but they're quite new to the market (a year old IIRC), and the verdict is still out on them in terms of long-term use.
If you're willing to experiment on the size, I'd jump at the DWS. |

yeah i was stuck between the kumhos and the generals and the wear rate on the kumhos were pretty bad. SO i got the generals. Great grip around corners, quiet, takes bumps a little harder because of the stiffer sidewall but it helps alot with handleing. and they are wearing fantastic.

MATR6, I do have them rolled. Are there any benefits to a wider and slightly smaller (diameter) tire besides looks? Everyone else, thanks for the input. Currenty have Kumho ASX's on now so i think i might give the generals a try

Since you can't really change the offset of the wheels w/o getting new ones, changing to a lower/wider tire might reduce the rubbing. There are wheel/tire calculators online that help with the calculations. A wider & lower profile tire will help with handling but a loss in little ride quality. Good luck. You should come to one of our Midwest meets. A few guys run RX8s & you can see what tires they're running.
