I recently purchased a 2009 6 S Touring. It has the Michelin M&S 18" tires. How will these tires be in the Wisconsin winter? Should I consider putting snow tires on it for the winter? If I do should I use the current rims or buy some older, cheaper alloy wheels? What year Mazda 6 wheels will fit my 2009? Thanks in advance for your help.

In a word: miserable. The Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 (which are OEM 18") are the same as the 17" OEMs on the '03-'08 models, and it took one light snowfall (less than 3") to convince me to invest in snow tires for my '04. Traction through light snow or slush was non-existent, and steering/braking was frightening at best.

You may not experience as much snow as I do from year to year, but if I were in Wisconsin, I'd spring for snow tires/wheels without a second thought.

Any 16" or 17" Mazda6 (or Mazda3) wheels will fit your needs for winter duty. I'd stick with the OEM sizes for each wheel:
16": 205/65-16
17": 215/55-17

Finding used 16" or 17" wheels for either the 3 or 6 shouldn't be hard, and for a decent price as well. As far as tires? I'd wait until October to start shopping for winter tires, since most retailers should have them readily in stock by then, and you'll have a better chance of getting new stock instead of last years.

Is that a typo? I think the OEM tires are 205/60R16.

My car came with the 18"s you are talking about. I wonder if we can use a 17" or 16" rim with tire for winters and still have the same overall tire diameter so you don't have to mess with the wrong speed on the speedo?

So far, I haven't heard of any fitment issues with the 2nd-gen going to smaller wheels/tires, and since the lower priced models run with 16" and 17" rims, I'd think you'll do fine.

Your best bet would be to stick with packages offered by Discount Tire or Tirerack.
