Hi all,

i have a UK 2003, mazda 6 Ts2 and am about to put some 18" rX8 wheels onto it. the wheels do not have tyres so that's the next bit.

I think 225/45/18 will be ok, but i live in London, in an area with really high kerbs, so want to choose a tyre with good rim protection.

I'd really appreciate it if you could let me know from experience which is the best tyre in that size for rim protection. i'd also appreciate it if you could let me see some pics of the protection if you can. The wife has already ruined one set of alloys, so i want to take as much precuation as i can with the new ones.

Thanks in advance.

Hello, take a look at this picture and judge by yourself if this is sufficient rim protection for you.If it is, you'll have to get 235/45/18 tires because the RX8 rims are 8inch wide, mines are 7.5 inch wide so 225's were enough for me.the tire model is Yokohama S-Drive btw.Save the picture and zoom in if you can't see clearly enough.
Kumho Ecsta tires also have good rim protectors.

i'm running a 225/40/18 on an 8 inch wide rim. there is virtually NO lateral protection against curb rash. i would go to a 235/40/18 or a 235/45/18 if i were you.

another option is just to be careful when parallel parking

I had a set of falken 235/40 on rx8 18"s and even with the obvious rim protector, in reality it does little to protect the lip of the rim, rubber < concrete.

Unfortunately, I proved a few weeks ago that 225s on RX-8 rims will not protect the rims. That's what I get for trying to park where nobody could door-ding me. :-(

Here's a pic of the 225/40/18 on the RX-8 wheel. They provide NO protection against curbs!!!

Keep in mind that if you go with the 235's, you will probably have to roll your fenders.

Mine were ziex512, which have a protector. It does nothing really.
