I've currently got Pirelli PZero Nero M+S tires on my Speed6, which I thought were a really great value. I was browsing tirerack and saw that there is a tire with almost the same name but with "PINNA" in the name. Tirerack didn't have the full story on this... has anyone heard of the PINNA? Is it the same tire with a new name or is it a different/improved design? The Pirelli site was not helpful either.

From the tirerack description of the tire.
"Pirelli also uses an alternate "Pinna" nicknamed tread design that features additional siping to enhance snow traction for most Original Equipment applications." After looking around a little, it seems these Pinna tires are slightly different than the regular PZero Nero M+S that you can pickup, they appear to be what they sell directly to mazda/ford/etc

Oh, so the Pinna has the Mazda P-Zero Nero tread pattern. I was wondering about them too, and tirerack doesn't have a picture.

I've just bought a set of four "PINNA's" from Tirerack.com. I'll have them today or tomorrow.
The main reason I went with those ones is the treadwear. I hated my stock bridgestone Potenza RE050A with a treadwear of 140 (on a scale up to 800 I believe, lower = stickier = wear faster). I don't do drag, I don't race, I don't want "sticky" tires because they wear too fast (25k kms, had to change them). PINNA's have treadwear of 400 and are "all-season" which is pretty nice here in Canada when it's time to change your summer tires for winters and you get caught in an early snowfall. Potenza's don't do well in snow as you can imagine... I can post pix of the special PINNA tread if you want to compare with yours... I drive a MSP6 2006 and bought the same size as my original summers (215/45R18) Ciao ciao! |

I don't know for Mazda6 GT's but for MazdaSpeed6 they should be Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires, not Pirellis. |

This is the Tread of a Pirelli PZero Nero M+S (NON-PINNA) the design looks very similar aside from the extra opposite direction lines for better snow traction. That IS the difference of the two different treads aka PINNA or NON-PINNA

I thought ^ is the oem 18" mazda6 tire, nero M&S?? Lots of sizes available.
From Tirerack: The nero (pinna) has the same tread pattern as nero (all season), both have limited sizes, both are M&S rated. The pinna has much more sipes on the inner 1/2 of tread width, vs the M&S, for much better snow/ice performance. The pinna will be rolled into the nero (all season) line. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?ti...Nero+All+Season You can compare performance by looking at the M&S vs the All Season versions. What's nice about nero's is they are not directional, and can be cross-X rotated to eliminate feathering wear related noise.
