There have been a couple threads on staggered rims, and if I remember correctly, many members advised against it. How come? I remember people saying that a staggered setup isn't good for a FWD car, but I don't really know why. I'm looking at a set of Volks that are FRONT: 18x7.5 +48 REAR: 18x8.5 +50. The fronts will fit fine, and the rears should be able to fit with a roll (maybe). What do you guys think about this?

One simple reason is that FWD cars are hard on tires, and you would not have the ability to rotate them...

I would also assume that it would have something to do with the dynamics of the FWD and the suspension design

for a single drive car (fwd or rwd) you won't see any "issues" from a staggered setup as long as they fit in there. on an AWD setup is when there tends to be issues. i would guess the only problems you'll get from the staggered setup is people making fun of you for putting larger wheels out back.

another one is understeer. you don't need extra grip in the back, you need it up front. which is why if there ever comes a time when I can blow a lot of money on rims, I'm going to have a reverse stagger (wider front) to help with traction out of corners. I'm certain a 245 will fit with proper offset. mmm meaty goodness.

The purpose of narrower front tires and wider rear tires on a RWD car is to compensate for/prevent against oversteer; the set-up (affected by inflation pressure) tends to make the car oversteer less. That is why such set-ups are prevalent on very rear-heavy cars like Porsche 911's. Now, unmodified, the front-heavy Mazda6 tends to understeer, not oversteer like a Porsche. The kind of staggered set-up you seem to be contemplating would exacerbate the inherent understeer.

On our Mazda6, we have adopted a mild kind of "reverse" staggered set-up, running wider 225/50R17 tires on the front and narrower 205/55R17 tires at the rear (all on OEM 17x7 rims). That combination corrects somewhat for the inherent understeer of the Mazda6.

I have stagger for summer. 17x7.5 with 235/45/R17 & 17x8.5 with 245/45/17. Also Stagger offset. I think a 43mm for the front with 245 & 45mm for the rear with 235. (IIRC) My 6s is even drop with teins & tokicos. I like the look of a fat tires better than a skinny tire.

You're running an 8.5" wide rim with a 45 offset in the back?? With no rubbing? Please let me know cuz I want to get a set in 18x8.5 +47 but I didn't think they would fit.

8.5 in a +45 sounds like it would rub without a huge roll (maybe even a pit of pulling). i'm running an 8 inch width with a +45 and i specifically looked for tires with a massive taper in the side-wall to avoid rubbing....i still had to roll my fenders once i dropped the car.

i'd definitely like to see that setup too ..if it clears, it'd be seeeeexy!

Yeah but the ones i'm looking at are 8.5" with a 47 offset. I was gonna put 225/35 tires on them.
