I heard the cheaper rims, dont have the clear coat on the rims causing them to chip. For example I paid around $1100 for my 18'in rims from wheelguyz.com and about year and some change that started to chip really bad to the point where i had to take them off?

Now is this true or is it just the brand??

It's true for the most part. I've seen some bad things happen to cheaper rims. From the paint being stripped off for using wheel cleaner, but this is with most aftermarket wheels since the products have acidic bases to burn through the paint, and I have seen rims chip.

I guess you get what you pay for man.

It depends. I like seeing rims in front of me so I can inspect and see their quality. My brother got non-brand rims on his 3 and they've been holding up nicely so far. But we don't have harsh winters down here, or harsh elements.

However, not all wheels have clearcoat on them. That's usually only found on painted wheels. Some are polished aluminum, some are chrome, etc. Do some research on the finish of the wheels you want and if your local environmental conditions are going to be detrimental to your wheel's finish, then consider a different type of wheel finish. Remember, though, all wheel finishes have their own issues with regards to keeping them looking good and make sure you are using the proper type of cleaner when cleaning the wheels. This will keep them looking their best.
