I am looking into switching my OEM 16 inch wheels with the OEM 17 inch ones.
I talked with Mazda and they told me that each car is calibrated for the size of the wheels it was built with. Switching the size of the wheels could throw off some of the gauges and also throw the suspension off, as the suspension was not calibrated for the bigger wheels. If this is true how much of a difference, in the gauges and suspension is there from going from 16 to 17 inch wheels? Any feedback would be great. Thanks. |

Never go to that dealer again.
Ever. Don't even call them. Find another dealer. Putting the OEM 17's on the car with OEM tires is fine. It won't effect any guages or speedo's. |

Crossbow, when I hooked up our Snap-On MT2500 to my mom's Concorde, playing around in the transmission area, there was a section that would allow you to change the wheel and tire size.
Have you seen anything similar with your Auto-Xray?

Hey 84ford,
No I didnt' see any option like that. Just raw data, the ability to export the data and view it in realtime, and the ability to reset troublecodes. The snap-on is a much more feature packed scanner I'd imagine...but also more expensive. |

The only time your gauges etc will be thrown out is if you don't keep roughly the same 'rolling diameter' eg reducing the tyre profile as the size of the rim goes up.
Why would they even bother having a 17" OEM rim if you could'nt upgrade to it?? |

According to Mazda (not my dealer, through e-mail) each car is calibrated differently for the size wheel that comes stock on it. Tons of members have gone from 16 to 18 so I don't see the big deal. Then if Mazda needs to re-calibrate the computer in my car they should do that since they are the dealer and I am the customer. They should want to keep me happy so I go back to them.

easy to know if it will fucked up your gauges
205 - 60 R16 = 25.69 inches diameter 215 - 50 R17 = 25.46 inches diameter It's nearly the same, so I don't think it should change your gauges. If you want to calculate your diameter easily http://www.speedworldmotorplex.com/calc.htm Peace! |

I got the same response from my local dealer...about the cars being calibrated, etc. I even questioned the service manager about keeping the outer diameter roughly the same....and he still fell back on the "each car is calibrated" thing.
I still plan to switch to a 17's and if my guages happen to be off by a 1/4 mile per hour...so be it.

Tire size calculator, going from stock 16s to stock 17s show the speedo reading 0.9% too fast with the 17s so at 60, it will actually be going 59.5 MPH.

Wow, that's pretty cool to know. So, basically it makes roughly no difference at all. :laugh
